OPGW: Transformative solution, synergizing transmission-line technology with the optical cable technology

We’re passing through the dawn of the Smart Era in our country. Optical Fiber Composite Ground Wire or Optical Fiber Ground Wire (OPGW) is a breakthrough solution that amalgamates power-transmission and transmission of communication. An OPGW cable comprises a tubular structure with one or more optical fibers in it, enclosed by layers of steel and aluminium wire. Demonstration of technological utility, an OPGW is designed and created for twin goals. It’s a dual-functioning cable, with merged functions of grounding and communications. While the cable works as a ground wire of the overhead high-voltage transmission line, the optical fibers inside it bring in the luxury for the simultaneous transmission of voice, video or data signals. The OPGW cables with optical fibers inside them are more dependable, stable and firm due to the metal wire wrapping. These cables are mainly used on 500kV, 220kV and 110kV voltage grade-lines. An OPGW cable is manufactured to endure the mechanical stresses caused by everyday environmental factors like wind and ice. The capability to handle electrical faults on the transmission line by providing a path to ground without harming the delicate optical fibers inside the cable is also considered while manufacturing it. Usually, there are three different types of an OPGW cable, Stainless Steel Tube (SST), Aluminium-clad PBT Tube and Al-clad SST Tube. Tensile strength, short circuit current and fiber-count form the essential factors to be considered to make it a suitable product for the towers. It works not only as an overhead optical cable, but also as a lightning conductor and a shielding line. With OPGW cables, power utility companies bear the exceptional capabilities of becoming telecom-carriers as well.

With years of experience in manufacturing and supply of OFCs, Polycab Telecom, the telecom division of Polycab India Ltd., is engaged in manufacturing as well as distribution of OPGW Cables.
